BEYOND THE FRONTLINE

Where Frontline Experience Meets Human Insight.
A Paramedic's Perspectives on Care, Recovery & What It Means to Be Human.

Emergency care is clear.  What comes after is not....

Paramedicine as a profession has long been shaped around acute medical responses and rapid decisive actions in moments that demand it.

But the landscape is changing...

With rising mental health crises and increasingly complex psychosocial needs, many encounters no longer fit neatly into emergency pathways.  At the same time, ambulance and hospital services continue to prioritise time-based measures over patient outcomes as key measures of success.

People need more than transport or handover or brief interventions - they need guidance, connection and support navigating what comes next.

As a 24/7 mobile service, Paramedics are uniquely positioned with further training to help bridge this space.  Yet the system has not evolved to fully support it.

That work begins here.

WHERE EXPERIENCE MEETS PERSPECTIVE

Based in Brisbane, Australia, Sally Jacobs is an advanced care Paramedic, educator, mentor, advocate and speaker working at the intersection of lived experience, frontline clinical practice and system reform.  For over two decades, she has supported individuals and families across emergency, clinical and community settings - guided by curiosity, courageous conversations, empowering potential and a commitment to seeing the person beyond their illness.

Having navigated her own experience of mental illness and recovery within a fragmented system, she brings a unique and deeply informed perspective to person-centred, trauma-informed and recovery-orientated care.  Beyond the frontline, her work extends into education, advocacy and system-level influence - contributing to individual, organisational and broader reform through collaboration, advisory roles, speaking engagements and direct work with individuals and families.  Across all areas, her approach is grounded in practical experience, empathy and a focus on improving recovery pathways and long-term sustainable outcomes.

THE PARAMEDIC NAVIGATOR

An ongoing body of work exploring care, recovery and what happens after the sirens fade.  Through writing, case-based storytelling and community conversation, it draws on frontline care, lived experience insights and current systemic challenges to examine how people navigate crisis, transition, identity and growth - and how care can evolve to better support the journey.  This is a space for curiosity, honesty and reimagining what's possible.

SPEAKING & INSIGHTS

I speak at the intersection of frontline experience, mental healthcare, recovery and what it means to be human within complex systems. Drawing on Paramedicine, lived experience and system-level insight, my work challenges current approaches and invites new ways of thinking about care, connection and outcomes.

CONSULTATION & COLLABORATION

I work alongside individuals, families, clinicians, organisations and systems to explore better ways of supporting recovery, care and connection.  My approach is collaborative by design - shaped by lived experience, frontline insights and a belief that meaningful change happens when people are invited into the process, not spoken over or worked around.

Sally is passionate about her professional work and always aims to provide the best possible service to clients and their families.  She has demonstrated initiative where there have been areas for improvement and actively sought out feedback from others regarding input on decisions.  If the opportunity presented itself, I would employ Sally in a similar role.

“BEFORE WE FOUND SALLY, WE WERE BARELY KEEPING OUR HEADS ABOVE WATER.  WE HAD TRIED EVERY TREATMENT THAT HAD BEEN OFFERED TO US AND ALL HAD FAILED.  OUR FAMILY UNIT WAS IN DISARRAY, HOPE WAS AT AN ALL TIME LOW AND ANGER AND FRUSTRATION AROUND THE ILLNESS WERE HIGH.  I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO TO HELP AND SAVE THE LIFE OF MY DAUGHTER.  ENTER SALLY, THE FIRST PERSON THAT MY DAUGHTER IMMEDIATELY RESPONDED TO.  FROM THE FIRST SESSION, THERE WAS A RESPONSE FROM MY DAUGHTER THAT WE HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE... SHE LISTENED, RESPONDED AND GENUINELY TRIED TO IMPLEMENT WAS SALLY WAS TELLING HER.  A WHILE LATER, I ASKED MY DAUGHTER WHAT WAS DIFFERENT ABOUT A RECOVERY COACH AND SHE SAID "SHE REALLY GETS IT AND DOESN'T JUST NOD AND SAYS SHE GETS IT LIKE EVERYONE ELSE DOES.  FROM OUR EXPERIENCE, MY DAUGHTER MUCH PREFERS SESSIONS WITH SALLY AND SHE RESPONDS TO HER LIVED EXPERIENCE FAR, FAR MORE THAN ANY OTHER PROFESSIONAL.
